Greenland Winter Adventure: Ilulissat

Europe > Greenland

Winter in Greenland is from October to May which transforms the country into a Winter Wonderland, where Northern Lights are playing in the sky and the sled dogs gets to drag the sled into the backcountry or over the frozen sea ice and enjoy activities like snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing, fishing from a hole in the ice. It is also time to be cosy inside the colorful houses with lots of candle lights after a day in the snow.

Day 1: COPENHAGEN - ILULISSAT

Copenhagen - Kangerlussuaq
Start your trip out of Copenhagen with Air Greenland’s Airbus to reach our national hub called Kangerlussuaq. Kangerlussuaq is the only place in Greenland that is situated inland and close to the massive Ice Cap.

Continue on your domestic flight with Air Greenland Dash 8 to Ilulissat. Flying time is 45 minutes. Arrival early afternoon.

Ilulissat means “the place with icebergs”, which it is indeed. The Kangia Glacier nearby Ilulissat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Icebergs can be seen from all over town and if the weather is clear you will also be able to see the icebergs when flying into the small town with about 4,000 inhabitants.

Private transfer and check in at Hotel Arctic. Hotel Arctic is probably the best hotel in Greenland. It is a 4 Star hotel with a 5 Star view.

Cultural Town Walk
Your personal guide will meet you at Hotel Arctic and take you on a tour around the charming town and tell you about the history and how people live 300 kilometers North of the Polar Circle. There may even be time to stop for a drink in one of the small cosy cafes around town.

Enjoy a dinner at Restaurant Ulo in Hotel Arctic.

Day 2: SNOWSHOEING & BOAT TOUR

Morning Snowshoeing
During winter, it can be difficult to explore the unique UNESCO world heritage area at Ilulissat, because of the snow filled landscape. During the winter the trail markings are often hidden on the longer trails. However, a local guide and snowshoes, make it a lot easier.

The tour follows the yellow trail from the power plant around the point. During the hike, there is time for the panorama view of the Sermermiut valley, the icebergs and the Disko bay. We will do a stop for hot drinks to keep us warm while we are enjoying the view. The hike ends at the old heliport.
Afternoon Boat tour
During one year, more than 48 km3 of ice flows into the fiord. The result is gigantic icebergs, which can be more than 100 meters on each side and with a height of more than 100 meters above the water surface. These giants strand at the end of the fiord, and that gives us the opportunity to sail among them.

Day 3: DOGSLEDDING

After a good nights sleep, breakfast will be served at the restaurant.

To many people, dog sledding is almost synonymous with Greenland. Truth be told, you can’t find a better way to experience Greenland, than on a dog sled racing through a wintry landscape with the noise from the dogs on the creaking snow the only sound breaking the silence. We will take you on a half day dog sled ride with a local musher.

There are 17,000 sled dogs in Greenland. The dog sled is only used in the area north of the Arctic Circle and in East Greenland, and these areas are commonly referred to as” the dog sled districts”. The dogs are still being used for transportation for the fishermen to go out to their fishing grounds on the sea ice in the fjord. Taking visitors on a ride is relatively new.

Evening - Northern Lights Safari
On winter evenings when the sky is clear you can see the beautiful Northern Lights over Ilulissat. We will drive away from the blinding lights of the town and go out where the darkness is most intense. Your guide will tell you all about what causes the phenomenon and give tips and tricks so that you can take the best pictures of the colours as they wander across the night sky.

Aurora Borealis is the night sky's most spectacular phenomenon. Solar storms over the polar region provide the best conditions to see the Northern Lights in Greenland, and the winter darkness let us experience it almost every day in Ilulissat.

We follow scientific predictions in our planning of tours and in this way give you the best possible chances of going out on a trip with success. When there is more than 20% chance of seeing the northern lights, we will pick you up at the hotel and drive out to the darkest area in Ilulissat.

Here we can take pictures and enjoy the show when the colors are moving in waves, back and forth in the sky. If the predictions are cheating us, we will give you a chance to go on tour again as soon as the chances again are over 20%. In the rare cases were no trips are done in your travel period, then we will refund the amount and hope that you come back to Ilulissat another day to try again.
