Escalante Adventure

North America > USA

The allure of Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument (GSENM) is phenomenal. Nearly 3,000 square miles of sun-drenched Utah backcountry spread out well beyond the visible horizon from the road, whether you’re traveling along the All-American Highway, Scenic Byway 12, or on Highway 89. That’s nearly 1.9-million acres of colorful sandstone cliffs soaring above narrow slot canyons; picturesque washes and seemingly endless slickrock; prehistoric village sites and abandoned old Western movie sets, among many other treasures.

Grand StaircaseEscalante, Utah occupies a transitional “step” zone between Bryce Canyon and the high Paunsaugunt Plateau through a sequence of brightly colored cliffs, Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon in Arizona. As the name suggests, the monument can logically be divided into two distinct areas, Grand Staircase and the Escalante River Canyon and tributaries, separated by what could be viewed as a third area: the Kaiparowits Plateau.

The Escalante Canyons section and Escalante River tributaries are the most popular area of the monument, especially among hikers. Active waterfalls, arches, riparian oases, sculpted slickrock and narrow canyons such as Peek-a-boo and Spooky Gulch are part of the appeal of hikes through the Escalante’s backcountry.

Day 3: Privately Guided Hiking in Escalante National Monument

Today your Guide will take you on private hikes of Escalante National Monument.

• Devils Garden - The famous Devils Garden natural area is a wonderland of Navajo Sandstone hoodoos, domes, narrow passages, and small arches. Tiny narrows carved by rivulets of infrequent runoff and diminutive pour-offs are among the features you’ll see during this hike.

• Calf Creek Falls - This hike is one of the most well known and unique features in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The trail follows Calf Creek to the 126' high falls. The hike is 6 miles round trip and takes average hikers approximately 3-4 hours to complete. Elevation change on the trail is minimal, but is sandy and can get warm in the summertime. In contrast, the falls provide a delightfully cool, shady haven which makes the hike well worth the effort. It's the perfect place to enjoy a swim and picnic lunch before heading back to the car.

You will enjoy lunch in the park and return to camp in time to freshen up before dinner.
